Kettering is the home of inventive spirit. The earliest settler to the area was John Patterson, who built the first log cabin in the area in 1798. The population began to expand in the 1840’s and the township of Van Buren was created, which would remain the area’s name for over 100 years. The city of Kettering was named for inventor Charles F. Kettering, who resided in his home at Ridgeleigh Terrace until his death in 1958. Over his lifetime, he held over 300 patents for his inventions including the all-electric starter, ignition, and lighting systems for automobiles. He and his partner Edward Deeds founded the Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company, Delco , which is still a vibrant part of the city of Kettering economy. The City of Kettering was named for this prestigious man in 1955 when it was incorporated.
